Thanksgiving Leftovers: Grateful People are Happier and Healthier

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal confirmed that the more grateful I am, the more energy, optimism, social connections and happiness I will experience. I know this to be true, but sometimes I “fall out of” gratitude.

Two years ago, I started – and subsequently stopped – a gratitude journal. Each day, I noted the things I was thankful for. Here’s what I wrote on the first day of my journal:

  • friends who think about me
  • my mother’s spirit
  • interesting work I’m proud of
  • Karen Steadman’s cheer and smarts
  • my parents’ good health
  • my new friend, Holly
  • Barbara Kingsolver’s writing

Eckhart Tolle wrote in A New Earth: “The source of all abundance is not outside you. It is part of who you are. See the fullness of life around you….The acknowledgment of that abundance that is all around you awakens the dormant abundance within. Then let it flow out.”

I’m committed to starting this journal again.

I’ll begin now:

  • My new husband
  • Hair that is no longer gray
  • Beatriz’s lessons
  • Geckos on my window
  • A load of firewood, stacked and ready.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.
